Gavarnie, the Chamonix of the Pyrenees

The Gavarnie massif has no less than 16 summits over 3000 metres. The whole tradition of mountaineering in the Pyrenees started here, for more than a century Gavarnie was a favourite destination for climbers. In 1887 more than half of the 505 population were either guides or porters. A whole dynasty of local sherpas became legendary like the Passet family, Laurent and Hippolyte (two brothers) were succeeded by their son Henri and most of all Célestin, a great hero of Pyrenean mountaineering.
