The hautes pyrenees by Sabine
"The ascension of the Col du Tourmalet at the end of the day with the surrounding peaks bathed in pink light. Superb!"
Tell us about your Hautes Pyrenees
There is always something new to discover, from the famous sites to secret corners with their hidden charm.
What is your favourite place?
I very much like the Pic du Midi. Take the cable car from La Mongie and ten minutes later you are at the summit. At any time of year it is a real treat. The view from the panoramic terraces over the whole range of the Pyrenees is just magnificent. Looking to the north the plains of the south west stretch off towards the horizon and one can even make out the foothills of the Massif Central. For those who are looking for something extra special I would recommend a night at the summit or a star-gazing evening. You and all those stars, it is quite simply magic.
You are the specialist in organising holidays for youngsters without their parents, what can you tell us about this?
LIke all children I am curious and love to be on the move. I organise holidays for youngsters in the Hautes Pyrenees. They come to enjoy the natural world, play rugby or handball, discover a thousand different activities (canyoning, rafting, treetop adventure...) they go on treks, make cabins, visit the Grand Sites, play a number of outdoor games... in short too much to do to get bored. We pay particular attention to the quality of their workers helping and their accommodation. Parents can be re-assured that their children are being well looked after!
What is your ideal winter weekend?
To set off to discover the wild side of the Hautes Pyrenees. Far way from the ski resorts and the crowds, a night in a mountain refuge or a gite with a snowshoe walk or an outing on touring skis. The guides know the very best itineraries and have always lots of stories to tell.
And where do skiers come into all this?
Keen skiers don't need to be jealous. I suggest a week of Ski Safari. Take a lift pass for a number of different ski areas using accommodation in the valley as a base camp for the best of both worlds, enjoying a different ski run for each descent with the unique ambience of a Pyrenean village of an evening.
Your favourite experience in the Hautes Pyrenees?
Follow the Route des Cols to discover the Pyrenees crossing from mountain pass to mountain pass. The first time I crossed the Col du Tourmalet I was heading towards Bareges. It was at the end of the day and the sun was sinking. From the top of the Col the summits of the Ardiden range opposite were bathed in a superb pink light... it lasted for only a few minutes but it was so beautiful.
