Once back with Marie Aurore the wines of Madiran will taste even better, and that view will be even more glorious...
Tasting workshop: Upon your arrival at the Maison des Vins de Madiran (in Madiran village itself) you will be welcomed by an oenologist, who will explain the wines of Madiran, this appellation from the south-west of France with such a growing reputation. Then it is straight into the professionals' tasting room where the wines are arranged on circular rotating tables, you will taste both the Madirans and Pacherenc de Vic Bilh wines. You will then be asked to select wines to match your menu, completing a truly professional tasting session.
Next is a visit to the vineyards and a 'sommeliere' style tasting session at the Domaine Benguerats vineyard. You will be met by Marie-Laure, who is the daughter of the founders of this domaine, she will take great pleasure in letting you discover her wines. And what a setting to enjoy the wines... comfortably installed in one of her chaises longues amongst the vines, with the village of Madiran below! Choose one of her wines, either the Madiran (red) or the Pacherenc de Vic Bilh (white), Marie-Laure will then take you to one her favourite corners of the vineyards to leave you to taste the wine amongst her vines. She will of course have prepared a delicious plate of toasts to further help you enjoy your solo tasting! Our suggestion is to leave this lovely moment for the end of the day to enjoy the setting sun over the west-facing vines.
Visit to the PIchard winery : No frills or fireworks here, just the careful and precise work of a committed winemaker who knows how to extract the very best from his vines. It is an authentic Madiran, round and generous, produced by traditional methods using the traditional grape varieties. In 1955 August Vigneau acquired an ancient hillside vineyard in the commune of Soublecause, in the Hautes Pyrenees, it had been abandoned since the 1950's. He deliberately chose this overgrown and neglected terrain, where he had to start from scratch, knowing that it would perfectly suit the local grape and offer the perfect location for an optimum maturation of the grapes. It is situated at the heart of the original Madiran producing area.
