Access to the summit is by cable car. From La Mongie the ascension takes 15 minutes. During the ascent the countryside will reveal its secrets little by little. At the summit the magnificent viewing terraces offer an exceptional panorama.

The Cirque de Gavarnie, a World Heritage site

50 million years ago in the Pyrenees water and glacial erosion created a number of natural ‘cirques’ with a remarkable perfection. Gavarnie is the most famous and the most spectacular. With 16 summits of over 3000 metres and the highest waterfall in Europe it possesses a magnificent beauty.
The natural spectacle it offers is remarkable. This once hidden area «resembles nothing that is found anywhere else» wrote Victor Hugo. Adjoining the great canyons of Aragon in Spain it is part of the «Gavarnie - Mont Perdu» World Heritage site.

Cauterets and Pont d'Espagne : at the heart of the Pyrenees National Park

From the village of Cauterets a number of very pleasant footpaths offer the visitor the possibility of escaping into the middle of a remarkable natural world - dense forests, waterfalls, rushing streams, mountain lakes, flower filled meadows. There is much flora and fauna to be observed, look out for the Isard, which is heavily protected here. Despite its distance from the Spanish border Pont d’Espagne owes its name to the fact that it is on an ancient mule route across the border. It is a remarkable site of a great natural beauty and is one of the most visited in the Pyrenees.

The Gavarnie cirque:

Gavarnie is a glacier cirque of rare perfection and impressive beauty. 5.5 km wide with vertical walls 1,500 m high and hundreds of waterfalls, it is unique in the world. The road leads directly to the Troumouse cirque, extraordinary, the Goliath of cirques, even vaster than Gavarnie. Notre Dame des Neiges:

A short, barely 20min walk to reach Notre Dame des Neiges where there is a beautiful view over the village of Gavarnie and its cirque as well as the Vignemale massif and the famous Ossou glacier, the most important in the Pyrenees.

The Lutour and Cerisey waterfalls:

Head towards Pont d'Espagne, there are a succession of thundering waterfalls along the roadside, the journey itself is a real show. Firstly stop at La Raillère where the Lutour waterfall is signposted, cross the footbridge and there it is in the forest. Then continue to Pont d'Espagne, the Cerisey falls can be seen from the road, if you approach you will most certainly be drenched in spray.

Cauterets - Pont d'Espagne, the Garden of Eden of the Pyrenees:

As you reach the Puntas parking area you have already crossed into the National Park and the site of Cauterets / Pont d'Espagne, one of the most visited sites in the Pyrenees National Park. It is a fabulous area, full of life, which water crashing from all directions. The Marcadau valley offers easy walks in a sublime setting of mountain pines, flowery meadows with towering rocky peaks all around.
