The strengths

  • 70 mountain lakes spread over the reserve
  • Convivial and welcoming mountain refuges
  • Walks with a qualified mountain guide
  • No carrying so all walking is lightweight

Dozens and dozens of lakes and tarns spread throughout a typically Pyrenean granite massif. The Néouvielle Nature Reserve is unique, its completely unspoiled natural environment offers visitors a superb spectacle with a splendidly varied biodiversity.
The richness of the flora and fauna, together with the many lakes and sublime scenery, have made the Néouvielle a subject for detailed study and attention. Created in 1936, the Néouvielle Nature Reserve is one of the earliest established in France. The area covers 2300 hectares and counts more than 70 lakes (Aubert, Aumar, Orédon, Cap de Long…) and tarns in which more than 570 species of algae have been identified.
The area is covered with Pins à Crochets (a dwarf mountain pine), not only is it the tree growing at some of the highest altitudes in Europe but also beats all records for longevity. This famous range is bordered by the massive limestone walls of Barroude and the Pic Néouvielle at more than 3000 meters of altitude.
It is a paradise for walkers, there are many possible circuits and the grand tour of the Néouvielle can be done staying in the 5 guarded refuges. In order to preserve and protect the beauty of the site but also to help you explore, many facilities have been created (visitor centre, parking, way-marked trails, toilets…). Themed walks are offered by the National Park wardens throughout the summer months.

Day 1

Meet in Bareges at 9am. Short transfer over the Col du Tourmalet towards La Mongie. Then a steady climb along the Garet stream to reach the first lakes, those of Greziolles and Campana.

Day 2

Cross The Col de Bastanet at 2507 m then the Hourquette de Caderolles, through the purple (and native) rhodendrons passing the azure Port-Bielh lakes. Beneath the Pic de Bastan the climb starts through the Bastanet pine forest to reach your refuge for a night on the water's edge.

Day 3

Discover the wild and beautiful Estibere valley, its forest, its many shimmering high altitude lakes. From the Col d'Aumar you have your first view over the large lakes of the Neouvielle.

Day 4

With the mighty Neouvielle peak perfectly reflected in the Laquettes you take to the high ground over the Hourquette d'Auber, followed by the Hourquette de Mounicot, to reveal a fabulous view over the many azure and turquoise tarns below, such a treat for the eyes!

Day 5

The granite landscape makes the Neouvielle so special, where better to admire it in all its glory but from the summit of a 'Pyrenees 3000' - the Turon de Neouvielle, the little sister of the Pic, the panorama is just exceptional...

Day 6

Descent into the verdant Bolou valley. Join the GR10 towards the Plateau du Lumiere with its superb panorama over the many villages of the Luz valley, to finish the circuit with a gentle traverse through the beautiful forest of the Ayre.
